The complete guide to each-way betting

An each-way (EW) bet is the default tool for UK racing punters who want a return if their horse is close without needing a dead-cert winner. It is simply two equal bets: one on the horse to win, one on it to place at a fraction of the win odds.

The structure

Place terms (the bit that decides value)

Bookmakers print place terms on the slip. They usually follow field size and race type:

Festival extra places promos can pay 5–7 places at the same (or a tighter) fraction. Model those as custom terms in the each-way calculator — never assume last year's grid.

Worked example

£10 each-way (total £20) at 10/1, place terms 1/5 odds for 3 places:

Win part @ 10/1£110.00
Place part @ 1/5£30.00
Total if wins£140.00

When each-way is (and isn't) worth it

EW shines when the place part is generous relative to the true chance of placing — big fields, weak favourites, extra-place offers. It is poor value on short-priced favourites in small fields: you pay a full second stake for a place that was already likely, at skinny place odds.

Rough checklist:

Settlement wrenches

Rule 4 reduces winnings on early prices after a withdrawal. Dead heats split stake on the tied part. A non-runner voids both EW parts for that selection. None of that is exotic — it is why a dedicated calculator beats a napkin.

FAQs

Is each-way worth it on favourites?

Rarely at short prices in small fields — the place part is expensive for little upside. It is more interesting on bigger prices in big handicaps or with extra places.

What if fewer runners go to post?

Place terms can reduce (fewer places or a tighter fraction) when the field shrinks past published thresholds. Check the bookmaker's place-terms table.

Each-way and BOG?

Best Odds Guaranteed usually applies to the win part (and sometimes place) after comparing early price with SP. Rule 4 can still hit the early price before that comparison.
